Top 5 Still Lifes of All Time

The still life is a treasured genre of painting. It depicts home decor gifts and many a decorative vase. Here are our top 5 of all time.

5. Cezanne, “Still Life With Skull:” Paul Cezanne transformed the still life by painting from different perspectives. His revolutionary thought led to the Cubism of Picasso and Braque. Notice how the skull seems to float; Cezanne achieved this by painting it from a different perspective than the pears. 4. Roman Still Life: Although the Egyptians painted still lifes, this, done by an unknown artist, this is one of the firstĀ  (and oldest existing) in the genre.

3. Van Gogh, “Sunflowers:” His palate and the decorative vase painted here are unparalleled.

2. Chardin, “La Raie:” The still life was often a genre that could incorporate weird or unnatural pieces. Here Chardin does a beautiful job capturing the grotesque and unsavory details of a dinner preparation.

1. Picasso, “Still Life With Fruit Dish on a Table:” Cubism changed the game forever, and this still life is just one example of it.
